I love how the "Innovation & Excitement" forum has the least amount of posts; ironically it is the least innovating and exciting forum here.
BUT I do have something to bring up. Has anyone played Portal, the new game from Valve? I thought it was revolutionary and also amazing in its complex simplicity. I played through the entire (albeit short) game in one sitting. I was momentarily addicted. The whole time I was playing it, I was thinking, "Wow, this is the first truly revolutionary game I have played... Ever!" Now, that might be overstating the game, but I did find the base idea of the game to be quite new and fun.
What other games do you feel are REVOLUTIONARY, whether through story, control and movement structure, or other ideas? I don't want to hear about games that are just good or great, but rather games that are revolutionary in a contemporary sense (not a game that revolutionized gaming 5 or 10 years ago, unless the fantastic ideas therein have not become commonplace in the current gaming environment.)
I just watched a video of Portal, and it realy seems fun to play :) As you said, it's very innovative, and I like the base idea too. Did you know Berthesda (makers of The Elder's Scroll) has released a new map that you can download for free ? I've heard it's quite complex to finish it.
I think that, if you like revolutionary games, you should try the Wii. I've played a little with it, and the console in itself is uncommon. There are also plenty of games that use this source of originality.
Sadly, there aren't that much of this kind of games on PC as far as I know...
Edit : Now I remember another game I loved a few years ago : TimeSplitter2. The story wasn't original at all, but the characters were very very fun, and that was the first time I saw cartoonesk style in a game. Yes, it's an FPS, but you should try it and you'll understand what I mean ;)
